Reno SPCA Report
October 11, 2022

SPCA of Northern Nevada (SPCA-NN) is very grateful for this grant, which allowed us to get the necessary dental equipment and full staff training so we can provide in-house dentals for our shelter pets!

Your organization has provided hundreds of pets with vital pain relief and improved oral health—thank you! Oral health neglect is one of the most common health problems our rescued animals present with. Our dream is to one day have adequate vet med staffing that we can provide the dentals, and extractions, for high-grade dental disease animals in our care, plus dental cleanings prior to adoption. This is only a possibility because of the grant we received through you!

We are currently planning a modest expansion of part of our Adoption Center (specifically our multi-purpose room) to accommodate our growing programs and we are including a small dental suite in that room expansion plan. As long as we can hire the additional support staff, then this will allow us to perform far more dentals with our current equipment while our existing surgical suite and vet med team continue their focus on HQHV spay/neuter surgeries every day.

Thank you so much!!!

Dental Wet Labs at SAVMA Symposium

The history of the Dental Wet Labs at the SAVMA Symposium dates back to the development of the Veterinary Dental Educators (VDE) committee by Dr. Heidi Lobprise when she originally introduced it as the University Program Committee to stimulate veterinary dental education at the veterinary medical universities in North America.   VDE was a committee of the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS) that is currently the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry.  In 2002 Dr.

MMSP Donation to Northern Nevada SPCA

Tooth decay, gum infections and bad breath often make rescue animals undesirable to potential forever homes. But, it's a steep price to pay to fix these issues.

The SPCA of Northern Nevada received free training and dental equipment to help combat this problem, thanks to the "Make Me Smile" program, part of the nonprofit group, Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry.

At the SPCA of Northern Nevada, about 90% of their animals are rescued from rural parts of Nevada and they often come in with dental problems, according to Executive Director, Jill Dobbs.
